England youth international of Nigerian descent, Rio Ngumoha, has been shortlisted for the Premier League’s Goal of the Month award for August. The 17 year old etched his name into Liverpool’s history by becoming the club’s youngest-ever scorer, netting at the age of 16 years and 361 days. His dramatic winner coming in the 100th minute against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park secured a thrilling 3-2 victory for the Premier League champions.
After teammate William Osula had equalised in the 88th minute, Ngumoha strode off the bench, exhibited remarkable composure, and swept home Mohamed Salah’s low cross, following a deft dummy by Dominik Szoboszlai. The goal sparked wild celebrations among Liverpool’s travelling supporters.
Ngumoha is nominated alongside the likes of Lucas Paquetá (West Ham), Antoine Semenyo (Bournemouth), Richarlison (Tottenham), James Garner and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (Everton), Dominik Szoboszlai (Liverpool), and Marc Guéhi (Crystal Palace). He is also expected to sign his first professional contract with the club this month. Voting for Goal of the Month closes at 12 noon BST on Monday, 8 September, with the winner due to be announced on Friday, 12 September.
